Avery watch

There are rumors floating around the Pittsburgh might be on of the teams that could claim Sean Avery on re-entry waivers. It was widely thought the NY Rangers were the only team that had any interest, but this is a crazy time of year, and anything can happen. The Pens are in the market for an Avery-type player - as outlined below - and claiming Avery basically means we wouldn't have to give up any draft picks or prospects like we would for the other players. This would be the ultimate high-risk, high-reward move by Shero.

From the National Post:
1. Pittsburgh: The Penguins addressed their need for a tough winger late last week when they acquired Chris Kunitz from Anaheim for Ryan Whitney. But, in many ways, Avery would be the perfect complement for the new and improved Sidney Crosby line. Kunitz could focus on using his size and skill to complete #87's passes while Avery keeps the bruisers distracted from the face of the Penguins' franchise.

2. Buffalo: The Sabres are rumoured to be moving Tim Connolly in the midst of a playoff chase. Avery would give them the flexibility to make that change. And to ignore Maxim Afinigenov for the rest of the season.

3. Nashville or Toronto: Two franchises who could use Avery for reasons besides his play. For the Predators, Avery would generate the headlines that could bring their attendance numbers up to qualify for the NHL's revenue sharing agreement. In Toronto, it's a bait and switch — trade everything of value and then bring in a player who is worth watching on and off the ice.

4. Anaheim: The Ducks could use Avery to replace Kunitz. Too bad they don't have remotely enough cap space to get him into the dressing room.
